🧶 Suggested Crochet Supplies

Note: These are just some examples of what you may wish to purchase. I have not vetted all of these exact products, although I have used similar items to each of the ones shown.

Buying Starter Supplies

Tools

If you are looking to start crocheting for the first time, this is a great set that includes all of the essentials:

  • your hooks in the most commonly needed sizes

  • yarn needles for sewing in your tail ends

  • stitch markers

to help you follow tutorials and patterns more easily!

Plus, it comes with a cute little pouch to store everything.

Yarn

As for yarn, a typical medium weight (#4) acrylic yarn in a light color is a great option to learn and practice with!

Some brands you might consider starting with include

  • Red Heart Super Saver (widely available)

  • Big Twist Value (JoAnn Fabrics)

  • CraftSmart Value (Michael's)

  • I Love This Yarn (Hobby Lobby)

  • Premier Worsted Yarn (Dollar Tree)

⚠ BEWARE:

  • When you buy yarn online, make sure to check the product description for the yardage/meters included per skein.

  • Solid colors often contain more yardage than multi-colored yarns in the same brand.

Other Optional Supplies & Tools

Yarn Winder

This is a tool to wind your yarn into cakes.

Cakes are easy to pull from the center without causing tangles while working.

It is a great way to rewind leftover yarn for manageable storage.

Flexi Needle Threaders

These have a very large "eye" to poke the yarn through, then you can thread it easily into your yarn needle!

These are especially helpful if you have poor eyesight (like me), unsteady hands that make threading your yarn difficult, or if you have zero patience.

Extra Stitch Markers & Yarn Needles

It's always smart to have extra stitch markers and needles. They will get left in WIPs (works in progress) and lost easily.

Safety Eyes

These eyes (and noses) clip right into your amigurumi work to give them that professional-looking finishing touch. (I don't recommend these for items intended for toddlers or infants.)

Clear Vinyl Blanket Bags

As your yarn stash grows, you'll want a way to store your yarn so that it's easy to find, but keeps it safe from tiny fingers, dust, & pet hair. This is one possible option.

Neck Light

At some point, you'll want to crochet while watching TV in the dark or you'll be working with evil black yarn that is difficult to see.

A neck light will help.

Small Project Bag

This small bag is a great portable option for small projects like granny squares, scarves, & amigurmi.

Large Project Bag

This large bag is great for larger projects like blankets or projects that require several different skeins.
